Mountain biking

In summer, mountain biking is only allowed on official marked summer trails in the park. Specially built trails, which are mainly available in Ylläs area, are particularly suitable for cycling. Most of the other summer trails may be too challenging for beginners. It goes without saying that other visitors must be taken into consideration, and those travelling faster always yield to slower people.

  • The level of trails ranges from easy to extremely difficult.
  • There is an extensive new network of mountain biking trails in Enontekiö. While these trails are not marked in the terrain, you can find maps on the tourism website of Enontekiö municipality. The level of the trails ranges from easy to extremely difficult.
  • The trails in Pallas area are challenging due to height differences and extremely rocky ground, which is why they are mainly suitable for experienced mountain bikers.
  • Easier trails with great views but also a lot of climb include the gravel-paved Särkitunturi trail (outside the National Park) and the trail leading from Lake Vuontisjärvi to Montellinmaja.
  • There is a number of specially built trails suitable for mountain biking in Ylläs area.
  • Take a spin to the top of Kuskastunturi Fell, from Kesänkijärvi to Ylläsjärvi or along Pahakuru fell trail.
  • Please note that mountain biking in the following areas is prohibited for nature conservation or safety reasons: Palkaskuru, Pirunkuru, Varkaankuru, Tuomikuru, Keimiötunturi and path to Sammaltunturi research station.
  • When out on your bike, follow the mountain biking etiquette and the principles of litter-free hiking.

Winter biking

Maintained winter trails take you from the villages to wilderness cafés and lean-to shelters. In winter, cycling on the trails is only permitted with fatbikes.
There are more than 100 kilometres of winter hiking trails in the National Park and in the surrounding areas. It goes without saying that other visitors must be taken into consideration, and those travelling faster always yield to slower people. Winter trails are also in shared use, which means that you may meet both cyclists and hikers with gliding snowshoes.

  • Trails intended for mountain biking in the park are maintained in winter as required by the weather conditions. Metsähallitus does not maintain winter trails.
  • When out on your bike, follow the mountain biking etiquette and the principles of litter-free hiking.
