The rugged fells and deep gorges of Pyhä-Luosto and the aapa mires and old growth forests surrounding them will mesmerise the visitor. Here you can quickly visit an easy trail, spend all day outdoors or take a small hike. The numerous campfire sites offer opportunities for resting – a friendly Siberian jay might also visit you at a lean-to shelter.

Activities and trails

An extensive network of mainly easy but also some more challenging day trails. You can hike through the park from summer to autumn on a hiking trail.

The easy gravelled trails are suitable for beginner mountain bikers as well. There are also maintained winter biking trails in the area.

There are a total of 150 kilometres of maintained cross-country ski tracks in the national park and nearby areas.

Natural features of Pyhä-Luosto National Park

Here, the landscape is dominated by the most magnificent fells and gorges in Central Lapland. The lower slopes of the fells are covered by old-growth forests, which open up into expansive aapa mires.

Visitor's checklist

  • The National Park is a nature reserveRespect nature and the rules of the national park. Everyman’s Right are not valid as such in national parks.
  • There are movement restrictions in the areaMoving around in the Isokuru restricted area is only permitted on the marked summer trail, and you may not stray from the trail or its structures. Moving around in the Peurakero restricted area is prohibited between 15 February and 31 May.
  • Always keep pets on a leashDog waste should be cleaned away from the paths. Pyhä-Luosto National Park is a reindeer herding area; keep a sufficient distance to reindeer in order to avoid disturbing or scaring them.
  • Make campfires only in designated sitesAlways check the current wildfire warning before making a fire. If a wildfire warning is in effect, you may only make fire in covered campfire sites equipped with off-the ground fireplaces and flues through the roof, exercising extreme caution.
  • Temporary camping in the area is allowedCamp near marked rest spots. Camping is prohibited in the Isokuru restricted area.
  • Remember to bring a trash bagThere are no waste bins in the national park. Bring along your own trash bag and take your waste out with you when leaving. There are recycling points in the Pyhä and Luosto villages.
