Muotkatunturi Wilderness Reserve is an excellent destination for experienced tour skiers. There are no marked ski tracks in the area, which is why skiers need strong navigation and survival skills and good equipment for facing the harsh winter weather. During the cold and dark polar night of the early and middle part of the winter, temperatures can drop as low as –30°C. The snow cover remains soft and will not carry a skier. During this time, only the most experienced tour skiers familiar with Arctic conditions should head for the area.

By late winter the snow has compacted and formed a harder surface that carries the skier. The days grow longer in early February and the sun starts to melt the snow surface, but the nights are still cold. Skiers heading out to the fells must understand the avalanche risks and avoid avalanche terrain.
