In Valtavaara, you're very likely to see or hear the Red-flanked bluetail (Tarsiger cyanurus) or the Siberian jay (Perisoreus infaustus). A successful birdwatching trip has good chances if you start early in the morning at the beginning of June from the Konttainen parking area along Virkkula Road, from where you can follow the Karhunkierros trail towards Valtavaara. You can also try your luck coming from the Ruka direction. A light hiking setup is needed: sturdy footwear, binoculars, and keen ears. The trail has quite a few elevation changes, so it's wise to allocate plenty of time.
