Hiking services in Petkeljärvi

The services at Petkeljärvi are mainly located at the Outdoor centre, which includes a Nature Information Hut with exhibitions, accommodation, café and restaurant services, and equipment rental. There is also a caravan and camping area with maintenance facilities. Additionally, there is a campfire shelter, a hut, and a fireplace.

Campsites

  • As campsites are shared resting places, you should show consideration towards other hikers.
  • In Cape Petraniemi there is an open grill shelter behind Petkeljärvi Nature Information Hut, and a rentable Hut for grilling. Making fires is forbidden anywhere else.
  • The Petraniemi campsite has a camp kitchen for those staying at the campsite.
  • Lighting campfires is forbidden if the wildfire warning is in effect, also in the open grill shelter. Check the current warnings (ilmatieteenlaitos.fi).. This prohibition does not apply to the Hut for grilling, which is opened to visitors during wildfire warning.

Drinking water

  • Do not wash dishes or yourself in natural waters or on well covers.

  • After use, remember to soak any washing water into the ground far enough away from natural waters or water supply points.

  • Visitors can get drinking water from two points outside the café-restaurant at Petkeljärvi Outdoor Centre. The water points are open from the beginning of May till the end of October.

Toilets

  • Toilets (including an accessible toilet) can be found in the camping ground café-restaurant.

  • A suction toilet can be found at Petraniemi parking area.

    • No waste other than human is to be put into a suction toilet. Any excess waste in the suction tank will cause problems and increase the cost of waste treatment.

Waste disposal

  • Hiking in Petkeljärvi National Park is litter free.
    • Remember to bring some rubbish bags when you go out.
  • Take your rubbish home, do not burn it. Small amounts of clean paper and cardboard can be used as kindling in a campfire.
  • Do not throw food waste out in the forest.
  • The National Park's recycling point is located at Petkeljärvi Camping Ground. There are no waste-bins in the park.
