Malla Strict Nature Reserve is located in Käsivarsi in Lapland by Lake Kilpisjärvi, on the edge of the Scandinavian mountains. The reserve was established especially for conservation and research purposes. The Nordic Kalottireitti trail, which runs through the area, leads visitors to windswept bare fells and lush mountain birch groves. Hikers must respect the access restrictions in the Nature Reserve and other special rules.

  • Be enchanted by rare mountain species and the special geology of the large fells
  • Hike or ski to the stone marking the border between Finland, Sweden and Norway
  • Kitsi waterfall, Gihcigorži, along the Nordic Kalottireitti trail is an impressive natural attraction
  • In the snow-free season visitors must stay on the marked trail
  • There is an open wilderness hut and a reservable hut in the Nature Reserve
  • A Visitor Centre is located in the village of Kilpisjärvi

Activities and trails

Hike along the marked summer trail to Three Nations' Border Point, at Kitsi waterfall / Gihcigorži, or to Pikku-Malla / Šilismalla.
