The ruggedness of the Julma-Ölkky Canyon Lake leaves the viewer speechless also in the winter. There is a magnificent ice fall in the northern end of the canyon in late spring. In the winter, it is recommended that you travel across Julma-Ölkky at the bottom of the canyon on the ice after the wilderness trail has been restored. The wilderness trail goes all the way up to the ice falls. The trail on the ice may get wet from time to time, which is why we recommend waterproof footwear. The trail leading to the Värikallio Cliffs is also a sled dog trail. If you encounter a dog sled, it has the right of way. The Julma-Ölky Wilderness Trail crosses a snowmobile track. The trail follows the snowmobile track from the Ala-Ölkky campfire site all the way to the Julma-Ölkyntie Road. The trail will be maintained from the end of January until the end of April.

Starting point
The Julma-Ölkky Wilderness Trail starts from the Lihapyörre parking area. There is a dry toilet at the Lihapyörre parking area, near the starting point. The Lihapyörre lean-to shelter is also near the parking area.
A couple of kilometres after the start of the trail, a wilderness trail to Lake Julma-Ölkky branches off from the trail. The trail runs on the eastern side of Lake Ala-Ölkky until you arrive at the Ala-Ölkky campfire site.
After the campfire site, the wilderness trail continues on the ice at the bottom of the canyon and goes all the way to the northern part of the Julma-Ölkky Canyon. Along the way, you can see the Julma-Ölkky Ravine, the rock paintings of Julma-Ölkky, the Pirunkirkko Cave and the ice fall.
The trail is narrow in places and has a few climbs and descents. The trail is usually maintained from the beginning of January to the end of April. The wilderness trail is groomed approximately once a week with a snowmobile and does not have ski tracks.
