The magnificent eskers and lakes with clear waters and plenty of fish in Hossa National Park have attracted humans since the Stone Age. The northern location of the region has left its mark on the natural environment of Kainuu, and the landscapes make you think of Lapland. The forests and waters of Hossa are within easy reach. There are plenty of trails for both hikers and cyclists, and the waters invite you to paddle and fish. The Stone Age paintings of Värikallio take visitors back to the world of shamanism, and at Julma-Ölky, you can admire a ravine either from the sides or from the water level.

Activities and trails

There are about 90 km of trails in the national park. The trails, most of which are easy to walk on, run through the handsome esker and lake scenery.

Cross-country skiing tracks and multipurpose tracks provides a great opportunity for enjoying the snow season.

Hossa National Park boasts four marked mountain biking trails, which run through the most handsome esker and lake scenery in Hossa.

Hossa boasts a large number of ponds and lakes whose varied fish population provide ample challenges for recreational fishermen.

The rivers of Hossa are easy to canoe. You can embark on a day's canoeing excursion or a longer trip.

People have been fascinated with the amazing esker nature and clear fish lakes of Hossa National Park since the Stone Age. The northern location of the region is evident in the Kainuu nature.

Hossa an old hunting ground

Hossa is an old Sámi hunting ground. Water routes have allowed people to travel through the Hossa area from the Lake Ladoga to the Arctic Ocean and from the Gulf of Bothnia to the White Sea.

  • The National Park is a nature reserveEveryman’s Right are not valid as such in national parks.
  • Camp only at permitted camping sitesCamping is only permitted in the immediate vicinity of marked campsites, campfire sites and huts. However, no camping is allowed at Iikoski campsite, the campsites on the shores of Huosilampi Lake and Keihäslampi campfire site.
  • Make campfires only in designated sitesBefore you light a fire, always check if any forest fire warnings are in effect. When a forest fire warning has been issued, lighting fires is restricted. The prohibition does not apply to cooking shelters or other fireplaces with a flue.
  • Remember to bring a trash bagBring a trash bag and take the trash with you or to the recycling point.
  • Always keep pets on a leashDog waste should be cleaned away from the paths.
  • Be prepared for areas with limited or no mobile network coverageRemember to take a paper map and compass.
