The shoreline banks of the lake are often steep in Oulujärvi Hiking Area. Kuosto trail starts at the western end of Kuosto island along steep wooden steps. The steps take hikers from the boat dock to the actual trail. At the start of the trail there is a campsite with a lean-to shelter and a toilet.
The trail continues east through the campsite. The steps up from the boat quay are the only steep climb on this trail.
