The Jyppyrä winter trail leads you from the Fell Lapland Visitor Centre through the winter pine forest to the top of Jyppyrävaara. Do you notice that the forest covered with snow has quieted down for the winter. Only the tracks on the snow reveal that a hare, squirrel or mole lives nearby. Although the sun doesn’t rise at all during the polar night, the northern sky glows with pastel shades of light blue and pink. You can climb to the top of Jyppyrävaara Hill and see the first rays of daylight. On a clear night, the skies can be alive with the green glow of the northern lights and filled with stars that seem to go on forever. As spring approaches, it becomes easier to see the landscape of the national park and the large northern fells.
- Remember to bring a trash bagThere are no waste bins on the trail. Bring along your own trash bag and take your waste out with you when leaving.

The Jyppyrä Winter Trail is a round-trip route with a total length of 1.8 kilometers. The trail starts from the yard of the nature centre, between the buildings. The winter trail is not maintained, so snowshoes are recommended in early winter, but in spring, the trail can be walked with winter boots.
The beginning of the trail runs near a pine ridge. After a short walk, the trail curves to the right and dives into the depths of the pine forest. In the quiet forest, only the tracks in the snow reveal the presence of hares, squirrels, or voles nearby.
The trail ascends little by little higher and becomes steeper towards the end. However, the climb is worth it, as the view over Lake Ounasjärvi towards the peak of Pyhäkero in the Ounastunturi fell is stunning. After climbing a short and fairly steep trail to the top of Jyppyrävaara Hill, it’s nice to build a fire and warm up at the Lapp hut. Enjoy the complete silence as the frost nips at your cheeks.
The return to the visitor centre follows the same trail.
