Hiking in Salla

On the hiking trails of Salla National Park, you can enjoy fell landscapes and the peace and quiet of the wilderness. You can choose from many different levels and lengths of trails suitable for day trips. The UKK trail, which passes through several nature reserves, and other trails in the neighbouring area offer opportunities for longer hikes.

  • It is a good idea to use marked trails in the national park to avoid damaging sensitive terrain. Salla National Park offers day trails of varying lengths for the whole family.
  • More challenging trails for longer day or overnight trips.
  • Day hiking trails are mainly easy gravel trails or wooden duckboards. Some of the trails, such as the Pahakuru Trail, are narrow and criss-crossed by rocks and roots in some sections.
  • You can also do a longer hike by combining trails in the nature reserve with other local trails.
  • The UKK trail, which passes through the area, is also suitable for trekking. In some sections, the trail is hard to see and overgrown. Trail markings are poor in places.
  • For visitors with trekking and orienteering skills, there is plenty of wilderness in the northern parts of Salla outside the national park.
  • The eastern part of the national park is located in a border zone, where movement is prohibited without a border zone permit.
