Hiking in the Kevo Strict Nature Reserve
- In the snow-free season, you can hike along the Guivi trail between 1 May and 15 October.
- Kevo Canyon trail is available between 15 June and 15 October.
- You can admire the views and visit the attractions in the Strict Nature Reserve, including Fiellu waterfall, Kevo Canyon or fell landscapes, as long as you stay on the trails.
The two long marked trails take you deep into the wilderness. While access to Kevo is only allowed along marked trails, visitors to this area must have good hiking skills to cope with the demanding conditions.
ocals who practice reindeer husbandry and other natural livelihoods have broader rights and privileges within Kevo Strict Nature Reserve than hikers do.
You can walk the Kevo trail either from Sulaoja to Kenesjärvi or in the opposite direction. Guivi circle trail starts at Sulaoja and branches off from Kevo trail at Ruktajärvi open wilderness hut, from where it returns to Sulaoja.
The two-kilometre Sulaoja nature trail, which is suitable for a day trip destination, is located at the southern end of Kevo trail outside the Nature Reserve. Sulaoja is a sacred spring for the Sámi and respectful behaviour is required here, as always in the natural environment.
The nature trail takes visitors through varying esker terrain. While there are some height differences on the trail, it makes for easy walking. Information boards located along the nature trail tell visitors about Sulaoja spring, its surroundings and the cultural history of the area.
