Skiing

Visitors can ski across the sea ice to the islands of the national park. Remember to take safety precautions when skiing on ice! Because the shipping lanes remain open, different routes must be skied to different islands.

  • The best ice conditions for skiing occur in January-March
  • Check the weather and ice conditions before heading out on the ice. Always ski on ice with a more experienced skier!
  • No maintained ski tracks. Bring a compass so you can find your way even when it is snowing!

Arriving at the national park by skiing

Suitable winter starting points are the Letto marina in Koivuluoto, Tornio, and the inner harbor of Kemi. Both starting points have information boards about the Bothnian Bay National Park.

  • From the Letto marina, it is about 6.5 km to Vähä-Huituri and about 10 km to Pensaskari.
  • From Kemi's inner harbor, it is about 13 km to Vähä-Huituri and 16 km to Pensaskari.

To reach Selkä-Sarvi, you travel west of the Tornio shipping lane, near the national border. A good starting point is the Prännänrinniemi rest area in Röyttä, Tornio.

  • The distance from Prännänrinniemi to Selkä-Sarvi is just under 20 km.
