Along this trail, information boards tell about the reindeer as an animal, events in the reindeer's life throughout the year, and the significance of the reindeer to humans. The trail starts in a mountain birch forest. After the boundary fence between the reindeer herding cooperatives of Lapland and Ivalo, the trail ascends to the lower slope of Ahopää fell. From the slope, there is a view of the nearby fells of Kiilopää. The trail is well-suited for beginner hikers. The reindeer trail is easy to walk, and there are boardwalks in the wettest places. The trail can be walked in either direction and it is marked with black posts with green signs featuring the Poropolku logo.
