Starting pointMakialammen pysäköintialue, Sodankyläntie 2078, 96900 Rovaniemi
After leaving the Makialampi parking area, you first go through an underpass to the other side of the E75 main road. The trail towards the Sortovaara Hill continues from the underpass.
About 100 metres from the underpass, you arrive at duckboards that take you across a mire. The duckboards have two wooden planks side by side, and the duckboard section is about 150 metres long.
After the duckboards, the trail continues for 600 metres before branching. From the junction, the trail continues to the left towards the Sortovaara Lapp hut. The trail continues as an easy route to the Lapp hut.
About 400 metres after the junction, you arrive at a second duckboard section crossing a mire. This section is about 60 metres long. After the duckboards, you continue on a path until, after about 300 metres, you arrive at the third duckboard section. These duckboards cross a small mire.
After duckboards you continue on a path for about 100 metres until you arrive at the Sortovaara Lapp hut. The Sortovaara Lapp hut has a campfire site, a dry toilet and a spring. Note that making a fire at the campfire site is prohibited during a forest fire warning. It is recommended that you boil the spring water for at least five minutes before drinking it.
From the Sortovaara Lapp hut, you can take the same route back to the starting point, in which case the trail is easy all the way and has a total length of four kilometres.
Alternatively, you can take the trail as a circular trail, in which case the second half of the trail on the slopes of the Sortovaara Hill is slightly more difficult. If you take the route via the Sortovaara Hill, the trail has a total length of 4.5 kilometres.
The path from the Sortovaara Lapp hut takes you to the Sortovaara Hill. Even though it will not take you to the top of the hill, the highest point of the trail is nevertheless open terrain offering beautiful views. The distance from the Lapp hut to the highest point of the trail is about 400 metres. Here you have a chance to admire the impressive old-growth forests around Sortovaara.
From its highest point, the trail descends the slopes of Sortovaara to a mire. Wooden duckboards with a length of 100 metres take you across the mire.
About 150 metres after the duckboards, you arrive at a junction that you already passed at the beginning of the trail. From the junction, the trail continues back to the Makialampi parking area on the same path as at the start of the trail.
