You start skiing up Kukastunturi Fell right at the start of the trail. The reward for a long climb is some amazing fell landscapes and a long, fast descent. If the uphill and downhill parts of Kukastunturi Fell seem a bit challenging because of the weather, you can ski along the lower-lying route to Kotamaja.
A wooded ravine leads from Kotamaja to the edge of the aapa mire. Skiing is even more fun in the spring sunshine!
Halfway along the trail, you’ll come to Peurakaltio, a place that is rich in old logging traditions. From there, the trail descends gently past Äkässaivo ravine lake and follows the Äkäsjoki River, where logs were once floated out of the area. The rest of the journey to Äkäslompolo is easy, relaxed skiing.
