Starting pointKeimiöjärvi pysäköintialue
Step onto a pair of skis and set off for Keimiöjärvi open wilderness hut. The track leads through a forest and is quite easy skiing. After the hut, you continue through the stunning fell landscape, past lakes and over mires towards Mustavaara open wilderness hut.
It’s just a short climb from the old reindeer herder’s cabin up the slopes of Sammaltunturi Fell, where the view is as close to perfection as you can get. The trees are covered in a blanket of snow and the Pallastunturi Fells are silhouetted against the blue sky. Everything around you is pure white. Measurements have shown that the air around this fell is the world’s cleanest!
You can admire the wide-open scenery on the slope of Sammaltunturi Fell for around one kilometre before the trail descends quickly back into the wintery forest. Stop for a break at the Tunturikeimiö ski café on your way back to Keimiöjärvi parking area.
If you’re looking for a flatter trail, we recommend skiing from Hotel Jeris across the lake towards the Särkijärven Majat cottages. This route provides an amazing view of Keimiötunturi Fell rising above the shore and the Pallastunturi Fells on the distant horizon. Check online for the business hours of the cafés at the hotel Jeris and Särkijärven Majat cottages.
