Starting pointSavilampi parking area
Savilampi parking area has no official address. Some navigation applications recognise the parking area as “Kanjonin kurkkaus starting point”. The parking area can be accessed by driving along Urriaavantie road and continuing on a forest road, both of which are bumpy in places. There is no winter maintenance on the road.
The trail is marked with green paint signs on trees.
The Kanjonin kurkkaus Trail runs in varied forests in northern Oulanka and climbs, almost unnoticed, along the shore of Kirkasvetinenlampi Pond, onto the top of the canyon. The trail is occasionally rooty and rocky. There are several sections with stairs along the route.
The first 2.4 kilometers from the starting point are relatively flat, passing through a forest. The trail sometimes goes down into a moist, leafy area with rich plant life. After crossing the Kirkasvetinenlampi Pond, the trail slowly climbs to the canyon edge, where several spots along the way offer views of the canyon.
From the canyon's edge, the trail descends to Savilampi open wilderness hut. From there, you can continue the loop back to the parking area or cross a suspension bridge to enjoy a view of the canyon from the south side.
The detour on the south side of the canyon adds about 1.5 km for a round trip. After crossing the suspension bridge, follow the orange trail markings of the Karhunkierros until you reach a signpost on the right directing you towards Oulanka Canyon. Beyond the signpost, the trail markings change to green, leading to the viewpoint bench along the canyon’s edge. The return to Savilampi open wilderness hut follows the same route.
At the end of the trail, the path loops around the north side of Savilampi and gently rises back towards the parking area. The last 600 meters follow a forest road.
