The Ahopää circle trail is a scenic route where traces of the Ice Age can be seen. Along the trail, you’ll encounter treeless fells, lush gorges, and streams. The route is marked with black posts bearing blue signs with the Ahopää symbol. Along the way, there is the atmospheric old Rumakuru day-use hut and a campfire site, as well as the newer and spacious Luulampi day-use hut and campfire hut. During peak season, a wilderness café operates at Luulampi. The area around Luulampi is a cultural heritage site, with camping prohibited in certain areas. The trail is partly rocky and challenging, especially for cyclists. Some parts are gravel-paved. The route is suitable for hikers accustomed to demanding fell terrain.

The Ahopää Trail starts next to the Suomen Latu Kiilopää parking area at the gate of Urho Kekkonen National Park.
Starting from Kiilopää, the Ahopää Trail ascends for 0.5 kilometres towards a reindeer fence. For the next 1.5 kilometres, the trail runs through a mountain birch copse along the fence and the slope of the Ahopää Fell. To the west of the trail, you can see a stony pit which was once used for storing meat.
From there, the trail leads away from the reindeer fence and gently ascends for approximately two kilometres to the Vävypää Fell. The trail is partly rocky and challenging to walk. For the next 1.5 kilometres, the trail descends until you reach the old Rumakuru day-trip hut. This section is also demanding, with a crossing over a low but wide stream.
A small stream flows in front of the old Rumakuru day-use hut. We recommend boiling drinking water. From Rumakuru to Luulampi, it’s a 4 km easy, gravel-paved route.
The most demanding leg of the Ahopää scenic trail is the section from Luulampi to Kiilopää. The trail descends, steeply in places, for 1.5 kilometres until you reach the reindeer fence. After this, it descends for the last 2.5 kilometres towards the Kiilopää village and the Kiilopää Fell Centre. This section is also gravel-paved.
North of the trail, a view opens over the Ahopää Fell. South of the trail, you can catch a first glimpse of the massive Kiilopää Fell.
You can take the trail in either direction. To extend your excursion, you can combine other trails with the Ahopää Trail.
