The Aakenushiihto Ski Trail gives winter visitors a taste of the wilderness. Ski up to the Haavepalo lookout point and admire the magnificent fell landscapes towards Ylläs. The thrilling fell landscape views from Haavepalo will take your breath away! When the weather is clear, you can see the Ylläs, Kesänki, Lainio, Pyhä and Aakenus Fells. The lookout point also has a pleasant campfire hut for picnics. The magic of this trail lies in its silence, spring sunshine and fell landscapes. Several rest stops along the route break the journey into suitable sections and invite you to enjoy a warm drink. The ski tracks and winter trails are maintained by the municipality of Kolari. There are signposts at intersections and campfire sites. The trail can be skied both in classic and freestyle techniques. The trail starts at Totovaara parking and continues by skiing up to the Haavepalo. Please check the Totovaara parking's winter maintenance from the parking's information. From Haavepalo, the trail descends rapidly to the Villenkämppä day-use hut. The uphill and downhill sections of Haavepalo are rated as moderate.
The Latvamaja located after the forested section of the trail is a great place to take a break. Skiing is a pleasure when you’ve got plenty of energy and remember to catch your breath every once in a while.
From Latvamaja, head towards Ojanlatva through the swampy landscape, this section is classified as easy. The route ascends from Ojanlatva towards Kahvikeidas and from there heads towards the parking area of the Ylläsjärvi Ski Resort.
