Svartholm sea fortress off Loviisa was completed in the mid-18th century. Svartholm was part of the same line of defence as Suomenlinna fortress off Helsinki. Swedish rule in Svartholm was quite short-lived as the fortress surrendered to the Russians almost without resistance in 1808.

The Svartholma Sea Fortress was built in the mid-1700s to secure the new eastern border of the Kingdom of Sweden – it was an integral part of the realm's facade to the east.
