Service structures in Sompio Strict Nature Reserve

The maintained service structures in Sompio Nature Reserve are located along the Pyhä-Nattanen trail and on the shore of Lake Sompiojärvi.
Along the Ruijanpolku trail, which passes through Sompio Nature Reserve, there are no maintained service structures within the reserve area. Heading north from the reserve boundary, there is a lean-to shelter by Lake Kaptukaislampi, 2 km away.

The water in the ponds, brooks and rivers in the area is usually drinkable but the waterways have not been tested. It is therefore recommended that drinking water be boiled. There is a household water well by Lake Sompiojärvi but its use is not recommended.

Campsites

  • As campsites are shared resting places, you should show consideration towards other hikers.
  • There is no waste management at the campsites, so bring your rubbish home.
  • In the Sompio Strict Nature Reserve lighting a campfire is only allowed on designated campfire sites which are at the Sompiojärvi lean-to shelter and the Nalijoki lean-to shelter.
  • Before you light a fire, always check if any forest fire warnings are in effect. When a forest fire warning has been issued, lighting fires is prohibited.
  • Firewood is provided at campfire sites. Remember that you may have to chop up the wood yourself. Please use the firewood sparingly. The lean-to shelters and campfire huts have a saw and an axe in their woodsheds.
  • Do not burn rubbish or tear off bark from living trees. You can use a small amount of clean paper and cardboard to light your fire.
  • The last person to leave the campfire site is always responsible for putting out the fire.
  • Further instructions for lighting fires
  • Lighting campfires is forbidden everywhere when a wildfire warning is in effect, this includes the designated campfire sites and the fireplaces at the open lean-to shelters. During the driest period it is recommended that fires be not made in the fireplaces at homes or huts, either.
