Hiking season of Herajärvenkierros Trail starts usually in May
04/09/2025Hiking on the Herajärvenkierros trail in Koli National Park and its surroundings becomes possible in the spring when the crossing at Sikosalmi melts enough for the pull ferry to be used. We will announce this on the Koli National Park's What's New page.
Floods and snow are possible at the beginning of the season
Hiking on the Herajärvenkierros trail becomes possible in the spring when the crossing at Sikosalmi melts enough for the pull ferry to be used. This usually happens in early May. At that time, there may still be a significant amount of snow in some places, such as on north-facing slopes and in depressions.
Additionally, there may be flooding along the shores of Herajärvi, which affects the passability of the trails. On the southern part of the Herajärvenkierros trail, the crossing at Herajoki may be flooded, but the spot can be bypassed via the road. The actual hiking season usually starts a bit later, at the end of May. Annually, about 5000 hikers traverse the Herajärvenkierros trail.
