
Snowhoeing in Urho Kekkonen National Park
Urho Kekkonen National Park offers excellent opportunities for snowshoeing on marked winter trails (saariselkatrail.fi or in untouched snow. The snowshoeing season starts when the snow arrives in October-November and ends in April-May. Often, the winter season is crowned by the crusty snow conditions of late winter.
When traveling in untouched snow, you can choose your route freely, but navigation skills are needed. Snowshoes support the walker, but in soft, untouched snow, they always sink a bit.
In Urho Kekkonen National Park, the Saariselkä-Kiilopää area, and Tankavaara have summer hiking trails that can also be used for snowshoeing. Trail markers may be covered by snow in the fells. These trails are not maintained in winter, but the path hardens over the winter due to use. The trails are marked in the terrain with trail markers that have their own symbol, and there are signposts at intersections.
Walking on ski tracks is prohibited.
