Huts

Metsähallitus’s destinations have both free and paid huts where hikers can rest and stay the night. This page presents the different types of huts. Also familiarise yourself with the hut etiquette.

Overnight huts

You can stay in an open wilderness hut without reservation and free of charge

  • An open wilderness hut is shared accommodation where self-guided hikers can rest and spend the night free of charge.
  • Open wilderness huts are open and unlocked.
  • You can stay in an open wilderness huts for a night or two without booking it in advance.
  • These huts have bunks, a table, benches, a stove and a dry toilet, and sometimes a gas stove. They will also have firewood, a saw and an axe.
  • In open wilderness huts, those who have arrived earlier must make room for newcomers. This way the last person in can dry their clothes and rest.
  • Be prepared for the possibility that there is not enough room to sleep in the open wilderness hut.
  • Tourist enterprises may not use open wilderness huts for overnight stays on their organised excursions, but they may use open wilderness huts as resting points during the day if they have permission to do so from Metsähallitus. Tourist enterprises organising paid for tours or hikes must use reservable or rental wilderness huts or privately rented accommodation for their customers to stay overnight at.

Ensure a place to sleep by booking a shared rental hut

In a shared rental hut, you can book a bed for one or two nights against payment.

  • Shared rental huts can only be booked for a night or two. The person that has booked a bed can get the hut key against payment.
  • A shared rental hut may also be a part of or in connection with an open wilderness hut.
  • Familiar and unfamiliar faces can spend the night together.
  • Shared rental huts have bunks, a table, benches, cookware, a stove, often a gas hob and a dry toilet. Hikers will also have access to firewood, a saw and an axe. In addition, shared rental huts usually have mattresses, covers and pillows.

You can book an entire rental hut for your group

  • A rental hut is a place for an overnight stay that can be rented for only your use. The hut may be fully rented for one or several nights at a time.
  • The modest equipment of rental huts includes bunks, a table, benches, cookware, a stove, a saw and an axe, often a gas hob, and a dry toilet.
  • Hikers will also have access to firewood, a saw and an axe.
  • Huts may also have mattresses, covers and pillows.

Daytime huts

You can rest in day-use huts without reservation and free of charge

A day-use hut is a resting place for independent hikers to be used in the daytime.

  • Day-use huts are open and unlocked.
  • Day-use huts can have a stove, often also a gas hob, a table and benches, and a dry toilet.
  • They will also have firewood, a saw and an axe.
  • In day-use huts, those who have arrived earlier must make room for newcomers.
  • In an emergency, you can also stay the night in a day-use hut.

You can book an entire rental campfire hut for your group

  • A locked, paid rental campfire hut is intended for groups and companies for eating and enjoying a campfire.
  • Rental campfire huts are equipped with an open fireplace, benches and serving tables and a dry toilet in the yard.
  • The hut has basic equipment for making coffee, but the renter must bring their own tableware.
  • Depending on the hut, you can book it for a few hours or a day. Some rental campfire huts are also suitable for overnight stays.
