The trail starts at Sammakkotammi, where there is a parking area, campfire site, dry toilet, and information shelter. First, you cross Sammakkotammi, an old log driving dam with a footbridge built on top.
The first half of the trail goes up and down along ridges. The trail offers glimpses of lakes Sammakkojärvi and Autiojärvi through the trees.
Before reaching the halfway point at Uiton Kämppä, you pass Venäjänhiekka, the most famous sandy beach in the national park. Venäjänhiekka has a campfire site where you can also camp. Next, you cross the estuary between Lakes Autiojärvi and Tiilikkajärvi via a magnificent arch bridge. In spring, the area around the bridge may flood, and the boardwalks can be submerged. Before reaching Uiton Kämppä, you cross the Itkonjoki bridge. In the yard of Uiton Kämppä, there is a campfire site, toilet, and drinking water well for public use. The cabin itself is only for those who have rented it, and overnight stays are not allowed in the yard.
From the yard of Uiton Kämppä, you return to the trail by crossing the Itkonjoki bridge and then continue along the eastern side of Uitonkierto towards Sammakkotammi. This last section is on flat terrain, alternating between boardwalked mire sections and dry pine forest islands. In spring and particularly rainy summers, there may be sections where water rises onto the trail or boardwalks.
The trail ends at the starting point at Sammakkotammi.
