Winter adventures on Lake Saimaa – admiring nature and protecting the Saimaa ringed seal
A peaceful winter atmosphere has settled over Lake Saimaa. Winter is a crucial time for the Saimaa ringed seal – February is the peak of their breeding season. That’s why February outings combine nature appreciation with responsibility: by protecting the habitat of the Saimaa ringed seal, we help ensure the survival of this rare species for future generations.
The Saimaa ringed seal and February – a crucial breeding period
The Saimaa ringed seal is one of the world’s most endangered seals, and its survival depends on the environment and responsible human actions. As soon as the ice forms and snowdrifts accumulate, the seals dig their snow dens into these drifts on the ice or use artificial dens. These dens protect the seals from predators, cold, and disturbances.
The breeding season from February to April is a sensitive time, as the pups are still small. The dens can collapse if people walk or ride snowmobiles over them. Outdoor enthusiasts must be especially cautious when moving through seal habitats to keep the dens and pups safe. Stick to open ice areas and avoid traveling near the shores.

Tips for responsible winter recreation on Lake Saimaa
Choose Your Routes Wisely
Follow marked winter trails. While traveling on the lake ice may be tempting, snowdrifts on the ice may conceal seal dens. During mild winters, a pup may be exposed without the protection of a den, making it even more vulnerable to disturbances. Staying on designated routes is also a safety matter, as Saimaa has many areas of flowing water where the ice can be dangerously thin.
Winter landing restrictions in nature reserves to protect the Saimaa ringed seal, as well as areas with motor vehicle restrictions, can be found on Excursionmap.fi.
Avoid snowmobiling and other disturbances on the ice
Snowmobiling, loud noises, and other disruptive activities on the ice can frighten the seals and prevent the mother from coming onto the ice to nurse her pup. If you want to enjoy the winter scenery, opt for quieter activities such as skiing or ice skating. Always check the latest ice conditions and equip yourself properly!
Make use of nature centres and guided tours
For example, the Saimaa Nature Centre Riihisaari in Savonlinna (savonlinna.fi) provides information on seal conservation and suitable outdoor areas. Guided tours are also a great way to learn more about the local nature and practice responsible outdoor activities.

Support seal conservation with small actions
Creating artificial snowdrifts requires a permit and is managed by Metsähallitus. The locations of these drifts are carefully planned, so do not shovel them on your own. Volunteer snow shoveling efforts primarily involve local participants.
