With SUPing, you can easily get on the water from almost any shore or bank. Standing up on the SUP provides a better vantage point of lakes and seascapes compared to traditional kayaking or canoeing, which are done sitting down. You can also SUP while kneeling or sitting down.
SUPing is suitable for almost everyone. The large size and stability of the SUP help to maintain balance. Beginners can focus on peaceful paddling and admiring landscapes, while more advanced paddlers can challenge themselves by, for example, experimenting with yoga or stretching on the board.
Required gear
The size of the SUP is chosen according to the weight of the paddler. If the board is too small, it will be tippy. However, this might actually be an enjoyable challenge for an experienced paddler. Beginners should ideally choose a large and stable board.
SUPs are available in both hard and inflatable models. Inflatable SUPs are easy to transport and store because it can be packed down into a small space. Hard SUPs, on the other hand, are ready to use right away, without needing to inflate them.
Most SUPs come with a leash, with one end attached to the back of the board and the other to the ankle of the paddler. The leash keeps the board nearby if the paddler falls into the water.
In addition to the SUP, you will need a paddle. Nearly all models have an adjustable shaft to suit the height of the paddler. It is also important to ensure safety. An important piece of safety gear is the personal flotation device (PFD), which should always be worn regardless of whether you are paddling in a calm lake cove or out on the sea in windy conditions.
Dress according to the weather. In cold weather, wet suits and neoprene footwear or windproof clothing help keep you warm. In warm weather, a swimsuit is ideal for SUPing.
Wear sunglasses, especially on bright, sunny days. Choose sunglasses fitted with an eyewear retainer or which otherwise easily stay on - this will prevent them from accidentally ending up as trash on the bottom of a lake or sea.
