Permission from the landowner is always required for off-road traffic. Off-road traffic refers to the use of motorised vehicles, such as quad bikes, snowmobiles or off-road vehicles, in areas outside roads.
Routes and tracks primarily intended for snowmobiles have been established in Finland in order to allow enthusiasts to drive longer distances without requesting permission from each landowner separately. Driving on snowmobile routes is free of charge, but you must obtain a track permit for the snowmobile track.
Metsähallitus mainly manages snowmobile tracks in Northern Finland, for which Metsähallitus’s Wildlife Service Finland unit sells track permits. Permits can be purchased in the Wildlife Service Finland online shop (eraluvat.fi).
